Choosing a CBD Hemp Extract Concentrate

CBD Hemp Extract Concentrate OilsWith so many cannabidiol (CBD) products on the market, you’re likely asking not only “Who do I purchase CBD from?” but also “In what form do I take CBD?” Whether you’re considering a tincture, an edible, a hemp extract concentrate, or another form, each method of consuming CBD has unique characteristics. Depending on your reasons for taking CBD and your familiarity with it, certain products may best fit your needs over others.

If you are looking to consume CBD in its purest, most potent form, you’ll want to consider a concentrate. Concentrates contain CBD-rich oil extracted directly from the hemp plant, with no additives.

What is a Hemp Extract Concentrate?

The first thing you may notice about a CBD concentrate is the packaging. Typically, a hemp extract concentrate is packaged in an oral syringe. At first glance, it may appear that you are meant to inject the product. But don’t worry, that’s not the case. Concentrates are meant to be consumed orally. Oral syringes make it easier to dispense a specific amount of oil, so you can know exactly how much you are taking.

While concentrates are taken orally, they are a bit different than a capsule or other edible supplement. This is because they are administered sublingually. Rather than swallowing the oil directly, it’s recommended to hold the oil underneath your tongue for 60 to 90 seconds. This allows the oil to be absorbed directly through the glands underneath your tongue. With this method, your body will begin to process the oil faster than if the oil were to first pass through your digestive system.

Generally, concentrates are thick and have a paste-like texture. However, not all concentrates are the same. At Eco Health Source, we have three forms of Proprietary Hemp Extract concentrate: Green Label, Blue Label, and Gold Label. What are the differences? What would lead you to consume one version over another? This blog will help you decide.

Green Label

A raw CBD oil contains just the oil extracted from the industrial hemp plant, with no other ingredients or additives. And, the oil doesn’t undergo any additional processing after extraction, so you are consuming the extract as nature intended.

Why does this matter? One reason many people choose to consume a raw extract is that, while nothing has been added, raw oil retains several compounds naturally present in hemp. These include additional phytocannabinoids, nutrients, terpenes, and fatty acids. This type of extract is referred to as “full-spectrum” or “whole plant” because it contains all compounds that have been extracted, including parts of the hemp plant.

These plant parts provide phytonutrients, beneficial nutrients that are only found in plants. Research shows that a diet high in phytonutrients can benefit our health and wellness in several ways: improving physical function, mental focus, increasing energy, improving mood and improving sleep quality. Studies have also revealed that such a diet can help prevent and treat major health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Our Green/Raw version contains CBDa, cannabidiolic acid, which is the form of CBD present in live hemp plants. CBDa transforms into CBD when hemp is heated and dried. CBD has been studied more extensively than CBDa. However, it appears that like CBD, CBDa interacts with our Endocannabinoid System (ECS). And, it’s believed to have antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Both CBD and CBDa are non-psychoactive.

Blue Label

However, Blue Label has undergone a process called decarboxylation, completed after extraction. In this process, the extract is heated to a controlled temperature. The heat releases CO2 from CBDa, transforming it into CBD. The exact temperature varies depending on duration of the process, but is generally close to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Some decarboxylation methods, involving a slower heating process, allow the oil to activate the CBD while maintaining terpenes.

Blue Label allows you to enjoy the benefits of a whole plant oil with a higher concentration of CBD than a raw version.

Gold Label

We’ve established that concentrates are the most potent CBD product, and Gold Label is the most potent concentrate. Green and Blue Label extracts contain a concentration of 15% to 18% CBD, while Gold Label has a potency of 25% to 27%.

Why is this? Like the Blue, Gold Label also undergoes a decarboxylation process to activate the CBD. Then, it is filtered to remove the plant parts from the oil. This allows the oil to be more concentrated, with a higher potency of CBD. The filtering gives the oil an orange color and a gel-like texture.

This means that the phytonutrient concentration is significantly less than a full-spectrum oil. The trade off is a more potent product. If you are focused on receiving the benefits of CBD but aren’t as concerned with compounds present in the plant parts, a Gold Label concentrate is an ideal fit.

Is a Concentrate Right for Me?

Depending on your preference and use, a concentrate may not be the best way for you to consume CBD. Consider the following:

Because a concentrate contains no additives, it maintains the properties of the hemp plant. This includes the taste. Other oral CBD supplements are designed to mask the earthy flavor of hemp, as many people find it unpleasant. Capsules are designed to be flavorless, while many tinctures include ingredients that give the extract a familiar, pleasant taste. Even as concentrates differ in their CBD concentration and presence of plant parts, maintaining purity means maintaining the hempy flavor. If you’re trying a concentrate for the first time and are unfamiliar with the hemp taste, you may want to purchase the smallest size available in order to determine your preference.

If you are interested in maintaining a level of discreetness when consuming CBD, you may prefer a softgel or edible that appears to be a more generic wellness product. Or, consider a CBD patch, which is worn on the body and releases a consistent serving of CBD throughout the day.
